WMC 2010 Countdown: Hector Romero
by rhythmism
Wednesday, Mar 10th 2010, 12:27 PMMost fans are unaware that Hector Romero's intro into the DJ world began at the age of 13. Nicknamed “DJ Baby Hec,” the Bronx native landed his first job at La Mirage, known at the time as one of the hottest dance clubs in the Bronx. Soon afterwards, he was spinning at a number of clubs including Palladium, Roxy and The Red Zone opening for David Morales. Now entering his 26th year of Djing Hector is surely no longer a “Baby”. His diverse music industry experience is not limited to DJing. From early responsibilities at a local record shop and head of day-to-day operations at DMI Records to the current label manager and business partner of Satoshi Tomiie at SAW.RECORDINGS. Hector is widely known to work hard at his craft ensuring that the fans always are in for a good time. Romero posses the unique ability to reach the masses through his music as well as his personality. Although he describes himself as a DJ with a musical identity crisis, deep down he knows that it’s his diversity and eclectic taste that set him apart from his peers.

WMC 2010 COUNTDOWN: HECTOR ROMERO
Your WMC Events
10 Years of SAW*WMC at Karma South Beach with Basic NYC.
How many years have you been coming to WMC
22 Years - ever since senior year of High School – Originally WMC took place in Ft. Lauderdale.
Biggest change at WMC since you’ve been coming
the biggest change I think is how many fans and lovers of electronic music have been migrating to Miami each year – the growth has been unreal.
Most memorable/craziest WMC experience you’ve had?
Oh my – each year is without a doubt more memorable than the last – it simply gets better and more fun each year –always a new story to tell.

What are your ideas for making the WMC a better conference
At one point I really missed the business side of the conference that use to go on at the Fontainebleau Hotel in the early 90’s and sometimes I wish the days of hanging by the poolside exchanging promos and talking to international A&R reps would happen again. But now I accept WMC for what it is – to me WMC has turned into a Music Festival and not so much a conference any longer. Now I attend WMC to promote myself, Saw Recordings, Def Mix and get in touch with the fans that support us.
Favorite place in Miami to eat/drink/chill and why
Satoshi and I have been going to Puerto Sagua - 700 Collins Avenue – it’s our little Cuban hole in the wall spot with amazing Spanish food. Steak with Onionz, white rice and black beans. If it’s not busy you can literally eat a proper meal in less than 30 minutes
Favorite Miami hotel
The Strand Hotel Ocean Drive is really cool – not too over the top – but just right.
Artists you’re looking forward to checking out in Miami
Looking forward to hearing Andre Lodeman who’s making his WMC debut at our Saw Recordings party – he’s one of my favorite producers at the moment and recently did a remix for Satoshi’s new single “Back To Basics” that comes out soon after the conference.
Best clubbing moment of 2010 so far
So far my best experience was when I played with Satoshi at Cromie Night Club in Castellaneta, Italy.
What’s in store for 2010
2010 is all about pushing the SAW Brand even more and keeping with a consistent release schedule – we’re excited about Stussy sponsoring our 10 year Anniversary T-Shirts for WMC -these are always a hit at WMC – My Def Mix Podcast is something I’m really proud of that can be downloaded for free each month from Itunes – we’re also gearing up to reintroduce the SAW podcast as well. And finally summer 2010 touring season is just upon us and this is always a great time of the year for Satoshi, Morales, Knuckles and myself.
