Rebel Rave Q&A w/ Deniz Kurtel | Pacha NYC - February 12th
by rhythmism
Tuesday, Feb 9th 2010, 04:52 PMDeniz Kurtel developed a deep love and connection to the sentiments of electronic music during her studies in the USA. Growing up with constant exposure to art from her mother, an influential art initiator in Turkey, and years of intensive classical piano training left her with a professional work ethic and a passion for art. An accomplished interactive sculptor, she quickly made a name for herself in the experimental art scene combining the use of sophisticated computerized LED arrays and mirrors. Her work has been the centerpiece of countless Wolf + Lamb parties in Brooklyn, and has appeared in various art festivals and exhibitions such as Burning Man, Communikey, Horizons, Love's Secret Domain, and Rabbit Hole. Deniz has recently ventured into the world of original production with her debut single "Yeah". The track has already garnered much praise, as well as a remix from Jamie Jones, and is being hailed as an instant classic. On Friday, February 12, 2010 Deniz will debut her live performance alongside a custom made LED structure, designed specifically for The Rebel Rave Tour. The tour brings the likes of Damian Lazarus, Jamie Jones, and Seth Troxler along with an opening set from New York's own Taimur + Fahad to Pacha NYC.

How did you come to meet Damian and become an ambassador for the Rebel Rave tour?
I met him last year at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, and the Crosstown Rebel party at the Marcy [Wolf+Lamb party] last May. I signed on Crosstown Rebels in the summer and that's how I got involved with the tour.
You're the lone female artist on the tour. What has that experience been like?
Pacha is my first gig, so I haven't experienced it yet!
This tour will mark your debut live performances. What sort of equipment make up your live set?
My setup is very simple for now.. I'm just using Ableton and an Akai APC 40 Ableton midi controller, and fireface 400 for sound. There's a set of other equipment (controllers and power/data supplies) for the LED installation, which perform both patterns that I pre-programmed, and respond to my music.
Have there been any glitches and self-made improvements so far along the tour dates?
again, this will be my first gig yet...
You will be performing in front of your own LED light structure. How did you develop an interest in this aspect of performance. What was your thought process behind this particular piece?
I've already been making LED installations for a few years. After I started making music, I wanted to bring these two together and they happen to work really well together in a live performance format. My goal for this piece is to constantly improve the programming and work towards a more and more intelligent communication between my sound and the lights. It's definitely a work in progress and will keep evolving, just like my live set.

You have your Crosstown Rebels single debut "Yeah" this week. What are your thoughts behind this particular track?
This was the first dance track that I made. I'm very excited that it's finally out... very excited about Jamie's remixes as well.. I recently made an album version of it also, which I enjoyed working on.
