This month we look forward to something that would not seem so NYC at first glance, but this year it has an extra strong New York connection, the annual Sonar Festival in Barcelona Spain.

THE GOOD - SONAR PREVIEW
New York Nightlife and Barcelona have always had a strong link with numerous nightlife names moving back and forth between the two cities over the years. This year though for the annual Sonar Festival in Spain, NYC is going to be represented stronger than ever.

Of course the main rep is the fantastic headliners The Beastie Boys. The Hip-Hop/Punk pioneers from Brooklyn have two distinct shows planned for the festival, starting with opening night when they join Narod Niki (the jam band-esque collective of minimal masters Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Monolake, and others) for an experimental jazz-funk journey.

For anyone who has seen the Beasties live (or caught their fantastic concert film “Awesome I F*$#in Shot That”), you know they often dip into this groovy, blunted mini-set over the course of their shows. The special opening night event will be a full serving of the Beastie’s instrumental action joined together with Narod Niki’s loop-happy techno for what is sure to be a unique and amazing musical stew.

Night two is of course the classic Beastie Boys show. If you’ve never seen them (like me) you should be duly psyched (like me) as the legends will be sure to wreck mad shit for the amusement of all.

Other NYC angles that will be in and around Barcelona during Sonar weekend include the following:
• Former NYC resident and now Barcelona transplant Christian Smith of Tronic whose weekly party at Club 4 at City Hall brings in Marco Carola, Tobi Neumann, and Paco Osuna on Thursday.
• The Robots own Bill Patrick joins Butane at the Alphahouse Showcase at BeCool on Sunday.
• Original electro-clasher Larry Tee brings Williamsburg to Barcelona at Rex on Saturday
• And to insure the afterhours have that feeling of home, a big contingent of NYC nightlife party people will be bringing their professional party skills on tour visiting the festival this year.

There are of course plenty of non-NYC parties that should also be a must to check out as well:

THE BAD – COMO SE DICE AFTERHOURS?
The Bad of course is that in Spain, for some odd reason, they speak a different language than they do here in NYC. Now since Pimsleur can only get one so far, to help all the English speakers while they are in Barcelona, The Good, The Bad, The Messy would like to provide this convenient list of phrases that will probably come in handy:

THE MESSY – HIGH SEAS
Now I don’t like to repeat myself, but it seems like just last month I was discussing how every week another best party of the year seems to go off. This month there were two boat parties in consecutive weeks which again laid claim to that special designation. First was the Matter/:Form reunion boat with Layo & Bushwacka! These legendary parties have always been ridiculously fun and again it hit the mark with an amazing time had by all. The highlight if you must have one from the entire night of dopeness was probably when Bushwacka! dropped a full on classical music piece in the middle of his set. From this Mozart or Vivaldi or whatever it was he then jumped into another track almost as old (and just as badass) New Order. It was an unstoppable good time.

A week later, Le Souk upped the ante as they celebrated the 5 year anniversary of the Le Souk Summer Session with a very special FREE boat party with the amazing residents Swamy, John Dill and the party masters Astro&Glyde as well as The Scumfrog, Kai, and headlining was none other than Sasha himself. The pirate-themed shindig meant that everyone was out in full regalia, rocking the eye patches, fluffy shirts, big boots and of course there were plenty of Parrots. It was a swashbuckling good time, and as everyone probably stupidly joked throughout the day, the party was definitely, “Off the Hook”. It was the perfect way to celebrate 5 years of debauchery at Le Souk, by cramming five years worth of debauchery into one boat on a Sunday afternoon.

Looking forward, Danny Tenaglia and Richie Hawtin at Pacha on June 8th is the next biggest thing happening. Cielo welcomes Sasha for a special invite only gig on June 14th so he can take another test drive with his new tracks, on June 30th Steve Porter’s Birthday Bash is at Sullivan Room, June 15th at Love features Originals Night, a killer new concept with all local DJ/Producers each playing only their own original tracks and remixes, Sander Kleinenberg visits Cielo on June 19th, Danny Howells returns there on July 5th, and Derek Plaslaiko’s b-day bash at The Bunker features him and Josh Wink at Luna Lounge in Williamsburg on June 29th.

Finally, peering far into the future there are three things which I personally am more excited about than anything else. Starting Friday the 13th of July NYC gets lucky as Marques Wyatt brings his West Coast style for a special monthly DEEP residency at Cielo. Mark Farina makes his Sullivan Room debut for BasicNYC on August 4th. Finally, if we are lucky the end of Summer could mean another Le Souk Summer Sessions Boat Party, this time kickin’ it Caligula style … stay tuned.

All times are GMT -4. The time now is 03:17 PM.
