no offense to T and Co.

but this person and a host of his 'contemporaries' are the least compelling dj's i've ever heard...

which is why i didn't go last night...and expected some review like this.

if you can't play like it's your last gig on earth...then why bother?

Anima. Look it up.

i'd be real interested in you elaborating on this...

now, I'm sure the party was awesome, and props to T&F for bringing him back repeatedly...

buuuuut, I've always found Craig's music to be real impersonal and distant from the crowd vibe.

everytime ive seen him, he stands in the booth, expressionless, or with his head down, playing some fwd moving tech house that just borders on k-infused noise. I dunno, just not enough stimulus for me i guess.

however, I'm sure t&f were awesome!

no one was there for Craig Richards. they were there for my birthday! haha

j/k

yeah i can't say I liked the music so much. distant is a good way of putting it. for someone who wasn't even there.

but i still had alot of fun.

no, I think I get it plenty. I like my "heady", "out-there" music as much as the next guy...having said that...he just doesn't do it very well.

i didn't go last night but i've had both really good experiences listening to craig and others that weren't so good. i'm not sure if that was due to some difference in his sets or in my state of mind/mood, club vibe or something else. the same can be said for various other djs.

with that said, i think it's funny that people get so elitist about craig's music and infer that people are idiots if they don't like it...it's not that they don't get it, they just don't like it. people who like *heady* music are no smarter or more sophisticated than those who like *body* music. and everybody goes out for a different reason, with a different expectation and desired experience... so you can only expect varied reactions.

i'm sure there are lots of djs, books, movies and other things that don't resonate with you for one reason or another and it's not because you're an idiot . i guess i still hold out hope that people will one day let each other enjoy what they enjoy without trying to mock them or convince them otherwise. it's all only a party after all

not picking on you, d.... but your sentiment is pretty common around here and i think it's *a little* offensive. hope cali is treating you well

whether or not people "get" cr has nothing to do with how smart they are, how much they "know" about music, or even how many drugs they are on. they just aren't keyed in to the vibe that comes across very clearly to others.

but there's no argument, some people just don't get it.

there are people at any given party who aren't "keyed" into the vibe that others are feeling (obviously).

it's the manner in which people talk down [to the craig detractors specifically] that comes across very elitist/condescending to me.

if saying people "don't get it" is meant generically to mean they "don't like it" then fine (and thanks for stating the obvious) but I get the very distinct feeling that it's meant as "don't understand it" as if it's something that everyone should aspire to understand.

You can "get" something and not like it.

yeah, there's no reason to talk to down to people about dance music. different sounds just resonate with different people. when a sound hits the right chord with someone, they fall in love with it. at least that's the way i see it.

I love Craig Richards. I've seen him destroy Fabric, Stereo, etc. I "get it". He was bad last night.

That noise he opened with just really got his whole set off on the wrong foot. It's not appealing to hear that kind of noise (I won't call it music, it wasn't) at a club. I've heard Craig drop some ridiculous tracks, that I also could barely consider music. When done at the proper time during a set, when the crowd is having it, it can be eye opening and awesome. But to come on and open with it, in a club he's never played before... it was awful.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt all night. In the first 45 minutes I had to convince people around me not to leave the club. He got better eventually. He played music you could actually dance to. But it was really bad for a while there.

You never know what you're going to get with Craig Richards. Last night was a big miss.

Yeah, I didn't really enjoy his set much either but *shrug* it's not the first time I've been out and didn't enjoy the music and I'm sure it won't be the last.

Sounds like his typical Fabric set. He's definitely not looked on as highly here as he is there by the minimal/tech house crowd. I get 'it', but 'it' puts me to sleep. He, and the fact that he's the musical director at Fabric has instrumental part of the reason that place has fallen off a cliff the past few years.

after about an hour and a half of music to wipe your ass with, he played like 30 minutes of music I liked a lot. then after that it was more toilet paper.

so there you have it......... the only reason Craig Richards gets booked is because he is the musical director of fabric........

seriously pic a side the business end of it or the musical end of it. Its a very rare thing that a person it talented enough to do both.

We dont book Craig Richards for being a musical director at fabric, Do you see us (Blkmarket) playing at fabric? I dont think so. We think he is a amazing dj and a really nice guy thats why he is our resident, we will keep bringing him to nyc and If you dont like what he plays then please stay at home.

wendy i think you summed it up pretty well here and i couldnt agree with you more.

Just for the record, craig to me since i heard the 1st tryant compilation years back was someone along with lee that i have always wanted to work with. Working with Craig is an amazing achievement.

I can agree to the fact that when i first heard craig back at fabric years ago, I wasnt to thrilled. but i gave it another chance, and ive enjoyed so many after that.

in now working with him for almost a year, hes really pulled out music that MANY people sleep on and they way he puts everything together is just super. Hes an amazing talent and gets along great with us. As fahad said, hes our number 1 resident for a reason.

Do keep in mind that one way a dj plays a cielo is not the same way he will play at love. its 2 different spaces+vibes and the crowd at cielo is not up for any experimental heady shit as it does not work there. Its not a place to get weird musically.

His set was excellent IMO. and i dont think that i am the only that says that.

Juan, i have to say that i dont think i recall you ever coming to hear craig play yet you are saying him and a bunch of his comtemporaries are not appealing. Not sure who or what you are reffering to.

Maria

On another note, our 1st party at Cielo went down very well i have to say. place was packed all night long and was mainly heads in there for the music more so that the regular cielo walk in crowd. The staff were amazing to work with and everything went smoothly from start to finish.

we really enjoyed playing there and will be seeing us more frequently @ cielo.
