Things happen fast in NYC nightlife and after recognizing a GOOD to get excited about, it can often go BAD at a moments notice.

THE GOOD – THE BAD – Studio B

With the economy in the tank and the specter of crime ridden, dirty & grimy, 1980s era New York hovering in the not too distant future, it reminds one that NYC’s party scene seemed to have a little more get up and go as they say "back in the day". With retro about to become reality it might cause a little discomfort for some while others may embrace it. One spot that seemed to be hotter than the shiny and glossy bottle spots that predominate current New York nightlife, already suffering from the burst bubble, was Studio B in Brooklyn. Since re-opening after a little fix me up a few months ago, they have brought a lot of old school flavor and tailored it to fit our current times.

bring two big time bad ass DJs in for one dope party
The big new thing has been their Together series of parties on Fridays. A simple concept, but one that has been lost from clubs for a long time: bring two big time bad ass DJs in for one dope party. Among the lineups sharing the booth were Marques Wyatt & Mark Farina, Derrick Carter & Doc Martin, Miguel Migs & Julius Papp.

Another great detail from Studio B of late is free parties. With wallets getting thinner, what better way to get folks to come out and spend money than by getting them into the club for free.

Now of course this would all be GOOD, except in the midst of writing about the good things Studio B has been up to, they announced that they are shutting down. Needless to say, folks are disappointed. But if clubs and promoters are paying attention, we hope you try to emulate what they have been doing for the sake of NYC party people because they were doing it right. Despite the shutdown, there are still a handful of hot parties coming up in the next couple months so be sure to check them out.

THE BAD – THE GOOD – New Years Eve

Why is New Years Eve "The Bad"? Simple, because I will be far from the debauchery of the City That Never Sleeps, in the great white north. But just because I won’t be able to enjoy the festivities in New York, does not mean I can’t contemplate which potential trouble I would be getting into if only I could.

The standard big room New Years Eve (and New Years Day) parties are decidedly not on the menu this year. Instead there are a handful of events at distinctly more low down locations.
  • Joeski, Mattias Heilbronn, Melvin Moore and JT Donaldson at East Side Company
  • Blk|Market Membership vs. Udder Maddness New Years Eve Afterhours at Studio B with Taimur & Fahad and Crazy Larry
  • Onionz, Adam Warped and Sameer at Brooklyn Botanica
  • Blood & Thunder III from the Bunker folks with Derrick Plaslaiko, Spinoza, and more at Galapagos
  • 718 Sessions hits Santos Party House with Danny Krivit on New Years Day
  • The Highlight though is certainly going to be the Global Frequencies loft party downtown with the one and only Francois K ascending to the decks around midnight for a four hour New Years set.
So how did this BAD actually become GOOD? Because one of the best New Years Parties is not happening on NYE but will be two weeks later on January 16th as Blk|Market Membership brings Craig Richards AND Ivan Smagghe to Studio B. Besides being an amazing double-bill, it will be at the best club that has already called it quits, it will be when the New Years Eve amateurs are still recovering, and most importantly, I will be returned to NYC from distant travels and able to celebrate a real NYC New Years Eve.

THE MESSY
Since I have last brought you news on the Messy, there have been many parties and a few that have risen above the pack. The ReSolute Halloween Party in Brooklyn was one of the big ones, a fantastic bash with the Circo Loco folks in tow. The Studio B parties have been great as you know by now, with the highlights being the last hour of Marques Wyatt and simply getting a chance to see Derrick Carter and Doc Martin in the same booth together was a treat in and of itself, not to mention the tunes they threw down. Sasha at Webster Hall was a great bash as usual with the added pleasure of Sasha dishing out a heavy dose of Tech-House and Robert Hood inflicted his relentless style upon Love for Blk|Market Membership party.

Coming up after the holidays the big one of course is Studio B with Smagghe and Richards as mentioned, other highlights to recommend are Djumma Soundsystem at Cielo on January 9th, Giant Step brings Norman Jay to Cielo on January 19th, Christian Smith revisits his Tronic roots at Sullivan Room January 23rd, Kevin Saunderson brings his bag of treats to Webster Hall on January 30th, Cari Lekebush and Alexi Delano play for the Blk|Market members on February 27th and of course NYC’s newest Techno weekly, Save The Cannibals premieres at Rebel on January 24th with Steve Bug.

XLR8R asks Magda...Who was your favorite DJ in 2008?

Patrick Russell. He has great track selection and a unique style. I especially love his slow tracky techno sets.

Go Buck!
