Hallucination Limited's annual WMC soiree returns for a glorious morning of revelry at Miami's definitive underground venue: The Electric Pickle.
Each year Three invites a like-minded special guest along for the ride. Previous guests include Radio Slave, James Holden, Damian Lazarus and Cobblestone Jazz. This year it's Three's West Coast brother-in-arms Doc Martin, who joins the celebration alongside label contributors Sycophant Slags (Mr. C & Adultnapper), Reverse Commuter *live* (aka [a]pendics.shuffle, Kenneth James Gibson) performing material from his soon-to-be released debut album Exposure and NYC's No Regular Play *live*.
Founded by dance legends Rabbit in the Moon and responsible for multiple timeless releases from electro legends Dynamix 2 / Jackal & Hyde to the benchmark tech-house classic that is Second-Hand Satellites --- the Hallucination Recordings imprint was one of America's most celebrated of the 90's alongside Ovum, Planet E and Exist Dance. In 2003, longtime label cohort Three (of Second-Hand Satellites) started the boutique, vinyl-only Hallucination Limited imprint to carry out his own vision of Hallucination into the 21st century. After suffering distribution woes all-to-common in the last decade, the label is back with a full release schedule for 2010 delivering a refreshing take on all things house, techno and electronica.
To mark this occasion we are releasing the Hallucination Limited WMC Sampler to give you a taste of new and exclusive material available only through Beatport on Wednesday, March 17th. This four-track teaser includes new and previously unreleased tracks and mixes from Seth Troxler & Inxec, Robbie Hardkiss, Zev of Wolf + Lamb, the previously unreleased Second Hand Satellites - Orbit 1.2 and Hallucienda guests Sycophant Slags, remixed by UK acid house legend "Evil" Eddie Richards. While times and technologies may change --- the musical diversity and quality of Hallucination Limited never will.

How many years have you been coming to WMC?
1993... crazy. Living in Florida in the 90's it was quite easy to get to Miami!!! It starts in NYC for me. I'd first experienced this type of thing by going to NYC's New Music Seminar from '91 to '93 which was like an American version of MIDEM, and also like MIDEM, it was much more than dance music ... it had everything from punk to hip hop to Nine Inch Nails and also Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier's first trip to the states, Derrick May, Frankie Bones and any other major name you can think of like Josh Wink and Hardkiss family. So, going there at the end of being an alternative music DJ, as I discovered house and techno during the birth of US rave culture... David from Rabbit in the Moon and I met John and Richie from Plus 8... Laurent... discovered the Sound Factory... that's where the deal for RITM's "Out of Body Experience" came to be... I played at Caffeine which was a big deal for me. All sorts of shit. It was the thing to do. Then in '92 everyone I had met was asking me about Winter Music Conference, but there was no Google-ing something on the internet then so WMC was still kind of a question mark to us. We'd been to raves there, but didn't know much of what they were on about. Then I went in '93 and I've been to every one since. New Music Seminar stopped after '94, and thats when I think ... along with the fact we were pushing on the first real peak of this music in the US .... and WMC was already growing so fast... but it just exploded after that and became THE global destination in the US for dance music. Long answer I know, but it's kind of amazing to look back on.
Biggest change at WMC since you’ve been coming
Before the collapse of the vinyl-only era you used to take one... sometimes two empty record boxes to WMC and return with full ones! Spending the day at the official conference hotel pool --- which is where most of the industry stayed --- was where you got promos, made deals, new friends and contacts. That element along with many other nuances of this business are either entirely gone or unrecognizable now. Now I do most of my schmoozing at The Duece Bar and all the promos are via email! No longer do you have that meet-and-greet type of mentality there. Especially for the smaller underground labels. For most now its simply a destination to show off your wares and let loose, but its good to see it's still going strong. Business models aside WMC remains a vital part of the American underground as a destination. Its important for it to thrive if for no other reason than even though there's now DEMF, Lovefest in SF and Electronic Zoo in NYC ....we simply don't have very many. One other change of note is now Miami is actually a place almost all underground DJs ... not just the A-listers.... can count on to play outside of WMC which was certainly not happening in much in the past. I think WMC has had a big influence over the years in that regard, but it took ages. And now to the point where people are doing dance events at things like Art Basel in December which is where some real magic happens... its not a secret anymore amongst the real heads.... yet it's still unspoiled.
Most memorable/craziest WMC experience you’ve had
For the craziest ...I always say "what we do is secret". Stand-outs DJ moments off the top of my head.... closing the AM Only party at Nocturnal's Terrace in '07 as an invited guest not on their roster was really special. The after hours at Cafeteria in 2004 with myself and Terry Francis playing for what seems like forever I still hear about to this day. And the worst was probably in the middle 90's. My records had dirt particles from a warehouse rave the week prior..... the bricks in the ceiling were dripping with condensation and unbeknownst to me had left circular deposits on my records. I was closing after Josh Wink and Rabbit in the Moon live. It was a highlight event of WMC that year and i was so excited for the gig. When i went to play every record was skipping and it took a while to figure it out. I was dead on my feet cause you couldn't just switch to CDs in 95! It all worked out, but it was a total nightmare.
What are your ideas for making the WMC a better conference
Great pool parties like Beatport and DJ Mag's events at the Shelbourne, industry things like Remix Hotel... WMC has found its feet again it some regards and a lot is going on back on South Beach which is cool to see. I'm not really sure what could make it more like it was in terms of topic panels and such. Really, though to be honest though I really only saw that stuff work at the grass roots level back at New Music Seminar days in NYC. Nobody was lining up for panels at WMC from as far as i can remember even though we went to some. WMC is a party destination and in this current day and age the biggest problem is things like the city of Miami's "Code Compliance Squad" handing out $1000 dollar fines to everyone to such excess like last year. They are "robbing Peter to pay Paul" if you will and that's shaky ground in my opinion.
Favorite place in Miami to eat/drink/chill and why
For food the nicer places are pretty known by everyone... like Nobu for sushi. Barton G is great for funky American cuisine. But, during the week I'm usually on the move and looking for good food very casually and that's why Le Sandwicherie gets my business almost daily, as the sandwiches are one-of-a-kind and full of goodness... plus the smoothies are fantastic. It's easy and very healthy. Of course, it's also across the street from The Deuce Bar which I've been going to longer than WMC. It's one of my favorite bars anywhere. It's great to take Europeans there, too as they are usually not privy to American dive-bar culture... from 8am to 5am there is a story being told at The Deuce. I like to walk the beach at night, sunrise or sunset. Joe's Crab Shack is a must-do at least once for anyone who likes seafood. Definitely look it up online.
Favorite Miami hotel
These days I'd probably say The Standard.... except starting on the Monday after WMC for a relaxing recovery by the pool. Last year and again this year I'm staying in a guest room of some dear friends living in one of those high-rises downtown. Other than room service and people cleaning up after me it's much better than any hotel... and they are amazing cooks... best Italian in town!
Artists you’re looking forward to checking out in Miami
Aquabooty event with Harvey is always special. Happy to see Kiki is coming this year... have not heard him DJ, but love the music he makes. Crosstown Rebels all-dayer is where i'll be Saturday afternoon. And of course to have my long-time friend Doc Martin back at WMC with me at the Hallucienda after-hours is going to be a blast. I don't try to plan too much, but rather see where the WMC takes me.
The best way to cure a Miami hangover
Mmmm...... not let one happen until the Monday after WMC.
What’s in store for 2010
The label is fully back and loaded with music coming from Radio Slave, Cheap & Deep, Seth Troxler, Blakkat... amazing newer US artists like Crazy Larry, Gadi Mizrahi and Zev of Wolf+Lamb... it's really exciting. Second-Hand Satellites is going to see a re-release and the never before released Orbit 1.2 will be out in time for WMC on our 2010 Spring Sampler. Goes without saying I'll be DJing more than ever... I can't see the end of that anytime soon. This year has been amazing so far and it's only March!
