Old Thursday, Mar 4th 2010, 12:24 PM #1 WMC 2010 Countdown: Steve Porter
Steve Porter is at the forefront of the next generation of electronic dance music artists, whose wide talents encompass an inimitable DJing style, international touring schedule, and his prolific, cutting edge productions on his own successful label PH recordings. His unique blend of energetic dance music incorporates various styles into an eclectic range of funked-up house beats with a techy-edge and twisted jams induced by his own re-edits and mixes that mold his DJ sets. His debut artist album Homegrown (2005) propelled him onto the international stage and lauded standing as one of DJ Times' "America's Best DJs". Porter's driving, dynamic DJing style has been captured on his compilations Porterhouse (2006) and Porterhouse Volume 2 (2007). Now his own label, PH Recordings focuses on introducing new artists from his own collective of Boston artists, other emerging global acts and as an outlet for his own productions.

2010 will be the year of Porterhouse Media with heaps of exciting new video remixes in the works including: "Life Alert Remix” featuring Wilford Brimley, “Doc Bottoms Aspray Remix”, and two remixes for the hit TV shows "Scrubs" and “Entourage” where Porter will be remixing the opening track “Superhero” by Jane's Addiction. On the touring front, Porter will be performing at upcoming massive events including NBA, Ultra Music Festival, Lollapalooza, WMC, and Coachella. At Coachella, Porter will debut a unique audio/visual live set full of original remixes as well as debut his “Superhero” remix collaboration with Jane's Addition's frontman Perry Farrell with an exclusive Perry Farrell vs. Steve Porter set in the dance tent.

WMC 2010 Countdown: Steve Porter

WMC is coming up – a time for artists to shake things up in the electronic music world. Are there any particular artists or tracks you are excited to drop/have up your sleeve for your upcoming WMC show?
I'm really excited about debuting my remix of Jane's Addiction "Superhero", the theme song to the HBO show "Entourage". I've been working closely with Perry Farrell on the project and we'll be performing it live at Coachella as well. I've taken a lot of time off to focus building as much original and remix content as possible leading up into WMC. As far as other artists and bombs to drop at WMC, I never really know what tracks are gonna pop until I make my final track selections before WMC. I usually have one huge listening & preparation session before I head to Miami and then sort of piece it together as I feel out the party.

Your Porterhouse party is one of the most talked about at the WMC. This year you will be playing with Dave Spoon, Sydney Blu, Hot Pink Delorean, Eli Wilkie, Night Riders, and Repeat Offenders. How did you go about choosing these artists an enveloping them in the Porterhouse family?
I usually bounce artist names around the crew that I'm really feeling, but also I collect feedback from friends because sometimes I live in a cave and might miss somebody who's cutting edge. We always try to keep a broad sound at Porterhouse WMC, we'd rather showcase a diverse set list of talent than book 5 tech house DJs to play for 7 hours. Ultimately the decision of what artists we book is democratic, I chip in but so does the crew.

A lot of people have different interpretations of your genre-defying style, finding it hard to lump you into any one category. How would you describe in your own words your signature 'Porterhouse' sound?
I think I got it from my father who was a scientist, but experimentation has always been my best friend and my worst enemy. I've had some musical peaks and valleys over the years, but I guess you could say the "Porterhouse" sound does not discriminate or fear to experiment with new sounds. One day you might see me wearing a techno shirt with housey pants and trancey shoes. Next day? Hip Hop shorts with a funky T-shirt... I don't really know, I just like experimenting and surrounding myself with people who challenge themselves to do the same.

With over 9 million hits on your "Rap Chop" remix, it's no doubt that you have launched a brilliant media campaign. What do you think about the mixing of electronic music with social media? What are your thoughts on the role of social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook in the music industry today?
Social media is huge and you have to stay on top of it. If you have 100,000 followers on Twitter, you might not need to rely on a record label putting your music out. You can finish an album or track and instantly distribute it to your entire online community. The bottom line is that social media allows you to build your own brand without the need for major labels and middle men.

Your "Porterhouse Vol.2" showed us a taste of your evolving sound - full of fast-cutting changes and constant transitioning. The music scene is so fragmented right now, with all the remixing and mash-ups. Where do you think the future of electronic music is headed?
Electronic music is one huge awesome mish-mash right now. It's all over pop radio, it's all over clubs, and it's influence is deeply set into our culture now. Anybody with a home studio can take reggae, rap, techno, country, rock, whatever... and turn those influences into a piece of music. I think "electronic music" is sort of a dated term now, I have apps on my IPhone that produce decent sounding electronic music. The technical aspects of electronic music have been made accessible to everybody now, so now it comes down to not only musical creativity but also how creative you are in delivering it to the public.

Any plans on working on a Porterhouse Vol III in the future?
For sure why not! I think I have a lot to improve on and as DJs we're always striving to make that perfect mix compilation.

You were one of the first to embrace the digital revolution with your video mixes. Any ideas for new media you want to experiment with next?
Right now I'm piecing together my audio / visual live performance setup. At many of my recent DJ gigs people have said to me "hey that was great but I was expecting to see some of your videos too". I want to incorporate my videos into my sets but also want complete creative control over the visual content. I guess all I can say is stay tuned, this is my primary focus right now.

You were recently announced as part of Coachella line-up this year and you'll be debuting a new live set-up. What can we expect musically and visually from your performance?
I can't wait for Coachella, I'm playing live with Perry Farrell and it's the debut of my video set. I'm going to be playing remixes of my Youtube hits and also a series of Perry's tracks including the Jane's Addiction "Superhero" remix of which Perry is going to be performing live during my set. I'll be playing as festive as possible as I'm sure the crowd will be bonkers.

Everyone is talking about how amazing the Coachella line-up is. Who are you most excited to see?
I've never seen Jay-Z live so I'm really excited for that. I don't get out to concerts much so pretty much everybody at Coachella I'm excited for. I'll def be like a kid in a candy store.

You've remixed everything from infomercials, to TV shows, to press conferences. What inspires you to remix something?
I either think something has potential to be remixed, or something absolutely must be remixed because it hasn't been yet. It's really about what catches your eye, there is so much stuff that comes out daily so it's more or less like going fishing. If I pop on youtube and see something worth remixing, I might hop right on it. My motto lately has been "everything sounds better remixed".

What's next for Porterhouse Media?
Right now Porterhouse Media is remixing the NBA's 2010 "Where Amazing Happens" ad campaign as well as handling projects for ABC, Disney, and some new infomercial remixes. We're broadening the company's horizons in 2010 and expanding further into the film and video game industries as there seems to be a real need for viral marketing in both. I'm pleased with the work we've accomplished over the last year and you can view most of it on either www.youtube.com/user/djsteveporter or www.youtube.com/user/porterhousemedia.
